Phase 2 and 3 of the short game area complete

Thursday 11 September 2008 at 10:15 pm

Phase 2 and 3 of the short game area have been completed. I've been neglecting my swing lately and am looking forward to getting the swing back in shape. It is amazing what a few weeks of no practice will do to your swing. I know that this short game area will be more benificial in the long run even if it cost me a month to get my swing back.

Norm's August Recap

It's been a while since the last update, but I've been working hard at the range! I started working on a couple of new things this past month: Takeaway and Tempo.

With my takeaway, I had developed a habit of trying to keep the face square to the target for as long as possible as I rotated my shoulders. I had previously believed this was helping keep my left wrist flat and opening the clubface. However, it was doing exactly the opposite. It was creating an early cupping of the left wrist, and the face was closed (toe down) as the club reached parallel on my takeaway. This was causing a "slap" at the ball at the bottom, and a low ball flight with the occassional hook!

If you examine this photo of Ernie Els' takeaway, you can clearly see that when the club is parrallel to the ground, the toe is pointed up to the sky (green line). The red line in the picture is a reference of where my toe was pointing before I made the change. All I am doing now is letting the club fan open slightly as I make that first move away from the ball. I have now restored the effective loft of my clubs, and I am hitting the ball further and much higher (especially with the long irons) as a result.
